Being chosen as one of the finalists for the Paradise Through Your Lens competition was a dream come true. Although we didn’t take out the major prize, I felt like we had already won thanks to the incredible week-long adventure we were able to be a part of.
As we based our film on the Great Barrier Reef, most of our time was spent in the water both snorkelling and diving. Neither Shawn nor I had ever scuba dived before, but it only took us five minutes to fall flat on our face in love with it. I was completely blown away by the feeling of being lost beneath the surface. It was almost as if the world above ceased to exist. Everything that I was experiencing mesmerised me; weightlessness, fish of all kinds, turtles, sharks, giant clams, lobsters, eternal clear blue water and the list goes on. The silence of the ocean was magical and I couldn’t help but drift off into my own world as we swam through endless coral gardens.
Tropical North Queensland is incredible as a whole, but the Great Barrier Reef is something that cannot be found elsewhere. We chose to base our film on it as I have always had a strong love for the ocean and all that lies within it. We wanted to captivate the audience with a sense of peacefulness, and allow others to feel the same way I do about the ocean and the reef.
Shawn and I work so well together as a team, and I am so proud of what we created. It was a whirlwind adventure to say the least, and is something that I am so thrilled we were able to take part in. We hope to live our lives this way; always seeking out new experiences and adventures, while documenting it all through video, photo and writing. Travelling inspires my creativity like nothing else, and I cannot wait to travel back to TNQ one day soon and have my eyes opened to even more natural wonders.
We’d love to share some of our highlights with you. Follow our journey in the photos below.
